Stick-up!

OLIVIER RANNOU / CREATION 2008

The thief is an entrepreneur like any other: all he wants is to capture new markets and earn more money than his peers. The high point of any self-respecting criminal’s career is the bank hold-up, the ultimate robbery, which can be elevated to the level of a work of art.

It is this rather dramatic notion of the burglar that lies behind Stick up!… along with a healthy dose of ridicule. Because, clearly, the pair of crooks in question here are fairly inept and have to manage as best they can with the means at their disposal. Will they be able to cope with the security cameras, the triple-plated armour, the patrols of armed guards? That remains to be seen…

Olivier Rannou, in this 50-minute, one-man object-theatre show, draws on his usual inventiveness to interpret scenes worthy of Tarantino, with fewer guns. Here, the actor plays the main character, with the assembled objects mainly serving to represent the various situations… helped by a lively imagination! Scene after scene, with an all-consuming sense of dramatic tension, Olivier Rannou sweeps us along in his wake, behind the scenes of a hold-up that’s full of twists and turns.

Motorised cobbled-together mechanisms, diversionary toys and videographic devices abound, serving up a spirited story, the villainous elements of which will continue to resonate with the least reputable among us!
